It would be almost impossible to imagine a modern kitchen design these days without an island bench. It is the place where you entertain, prepare food, and have dinner with your family. Since it is a central piece of any kitchen, you should pay much attention to the materials used for your island bench. For a minimalist interior, marble is the first choice. Not only does it create that elegant look, but it’s durable and resilient.

Carefully choosing the colours is very important with modern designer kitchens, especially when you want to obtain a minimalist look. With so many materials on the market and ideas from the Internet, it is very easy to overdo it. However, to stay on the safe side, all you need to do is choose neutral colours, like white, grey, beige, brown, and their variables. A touch or two of colour will prevent your kitchen from becoming boring, but be careful not to exaggerate; two or three elements in a bright colour are sufficient.

To obtain a modern kitchen design, you must be merciless and give up some of those household items that we take for granted. You might not need them after all, and all they do is take up space. Your get-rid-of list could include items like the food processor, the salad spinner, the pasta maker, the Panini press, and the holiday dishes. If you don’t use them every week, they will become dust gatherers ruining your kitchen aspect at the same time.

Your kitchen design should be based on symmetrical lines and surfaces that are not loaded with unnecessary items or decorations. Those clean surface; you’ll need to resist the temptation of buying all kinds of non-essential kitchen items, will make space look bigger and more relaxing.

The suggestions provided above can make you wonder if you will still have all the necessary items in a kitchen. The answer is yes if you only include utensils and appliances that you use on a regular basis and which preferably have multiple uses. An organised kitchen is a functional arrangement of elements, colours, lighting, and not a gathering of all kinds of kitchen items that you could do without.

By following these tips, you will save money on your renovation project and also obtain a kitchen where you feel comfortable and which doesn’t fall out of fashion in a couple of years!

Range hoods are a must in any modern kitchen, but they often spoil the design and ruin that overall classy impression you want to leave to your guests. The solution is to install hidden range hoods – these extremely useful appliances can be confined inside your kitchen cabinetry while the smoke and food smells will disappear miraculously.

Marble is an excellent choice if your kitchen decorating ideas revolve around classic beauty and elegance. Marble slabs are extremely resilient and will not deteriorate because of a hot pan or cutting your vegetables directly on your countertop. Marble offers great value for money and you should go for it if your kitchen design permits this choice of material.

Modern Kitchen Designs and ideas

First off welcome to our first blog just in time for the Christmas holidays, with supply and demand at an all time high and some unique designs coming out in the kitchen world in 2014, I thought we would touch on a few stand out kitchens, ideas and tips for your next kitchen design.

The common trend in 2014 would have to be the whole uncluttered look and feel in the kitchen and what a great idea it is, I find nothing worse than a kitchen jammed packed with bench top accessories, knives holders and tea towels scattered throughout. This is why our designers have stepped it up and can factor in hidden locations for all these ugly little accessories, unless of course you’re a picking up some designer bench top accessories to perfectly match your kitchen fit out.

A beautiful yet elegant kitchen comes from a few key values.

1: Less is more

Our favourite by far is this approach, as it not only presents beautifully but it creates the feeling of space and that the area you are in, is simply bigger than it truly is. Ample storage space and clean colours can really do any kitchen a huge favour.

2: Disguise

In every kitchen there are essential appliances that simply need to be displayed, that’s where disguise comes in. Disguising items such as ovens, fridges and dish washers is a really great thing to consider in your design, as you can see in the image above the oven and fridge are both finished in stainless steel which in many normal kitchens would standout, yet in this design the blue 2pac cupboards, gloss white bench tops and polished timber book shelf take your eyes away from these appliances and focus on the key design features.

3: Lighting

Lighting has become a huge part of the finishing touches with the advancement in LED lighting over the past few years, we have seen an increase in the amount of wattage (brightness) that the LED has to offer along with the crystal white colour they can bring to your kitchen area.

So when it comes time to sit down and design your new kitchen remember a few things, less is more, disguise, lighting and symmetry. Symmetry in a kitchen design works in many homes but not in all, keeping cabinets at the same size and height, instead of large and small scattered. Why not look at using a larger cabinet on opposite sides of the kitchen and therefore lowering the number of required cabinets to achieve the same storage space. Keep similar items on opposite sides of the kitchen or around the same area or axis.
